The Journey of Entrepreneur Burul Botokanova
From an Ambitious Start to a Thriving Business: The Journey of Entrepreneur Burul Botokanova
Burul Botokanova from Bishkek developed a passion for sewing at a young age. Her love for creating beautiful clothing inspired her to open her own sewing workshop, where she began producing traditional ethnic apparel. Over the years, Burul steadily grew her business, refined her craftsmanship, and expanded her product range, investing not only financial resources but also her heart and dedication into her work.

Burul is a mother of three, and her family has always been her strongest source of support. Her loved ones believe in her vision, encourage her initiatives, and help with the business whenever possible, providing a solid foundation for its growth.
In the early stages of her entrepreneurial journey, Burul relied on loans from other banks in the amounts of KGS 100,000 and KGS 500,000. While these funds helped maintain the stable operation of her atelier, they were not sufficient to achieve large-scale expansion or bring her more ambitious plans to life.

Burul always dreamed of modernizing her production, purchasing advanced equipment, and fulfilling larger orders. After learning from friends about the EBRD Women in Business in Central Asia programme, implemented through FINCA Bank, she decided to seize the opportunity and applied for a FINCA Aiym business loan.
Through the programme, Burul received a FINCA Aiym loan of KGS 2.5 million from FINCA Bank for a period of 60 months. This financing became a major milestone in the development of her business. It enabled her to expand production, upgrade equipment, introduce modern technologies, and significantly broaden her collection of ethnic clothing.

Today, her sewing workshop operates with 15 sewing machines and a dedicated team of employees, allowing the business to handle larger volumes of orders within shorter timeframes.
However, financial support was only part of the success. Participation in the EBRD Women in Business programme inspired Burul, strengthened her confidence in her own abilities, and empowered her as a woman entrepreneur.
Today, Burul continues to successfully develop her atelier and sewing workshop, creating unique ethnic clothing that beautifully blends traditional heritage with contemporary design. Her products are available for both wholesale and retail customers. She also shares her work and achievements with an audience of more than 30,000 followers on Instagram: @tumar_ethno.
Burul’s story is a powerful example of how determination, talent, family support, and access to financial opportunities can help women turn their dreams into successful businesses.
